Now that you have some knowledge on how our wireless carriers use the spectrum for phones let me explain to you why Verizon might be setting their phones free.

As this article states, if you are already on Verizon, you are not going to switch to AT&T – period.

But if AT&T wants to be competitive with Verizon, and we all know they do, their hands will be forced and sell future phones unlocked.

Why is this good for Verizon? Because 1 to 2 years after AT&T unlocks their phones those customers can switch to Verizon – hassle free.

In 2 years time we might even see calls being made over 4G LTE and a new generation of smartphones and tablets. When this jump to a more mature LTE network happens all bets are off and Verizon, who currently has the nations largest and most expansive LTE network will be able to migrate their evdo customers to the new efficient network and benefit with a new surge of “free phones” on their network.

Of course, this could all backfire; AT&T doesn’t unlock their phones and Verizon customers can switch to AT&T.

Only time will tell, but either way, this is great news for the consumer and pushes our carriers towards a shared model which will provide everyone with more reliable mobile connectivity.
